It's Tuesday night in Brooklyn and four artists are hard at work. The clock is ticking for artists Steven Cogle, Adam Dare, Whisbe and Kennedy Yanko as their show, "A Curious Cast of Characters Presents: No Subject" takes place September 25, at Spinelli gallery. "Picture this," Dare says. "From where I'm standing in Whisby's house, I can see the backyard as we're making prints of our collaborative pieces. As some of us work on the prints, others are hand embellishing the prints."
This makeshift assembly line is evidence that "A Curious Cast of Characters Presents: No Subject" is a true group show through and through. "We are coming together, inspiring one another with our journeys, exploring our process and sharing that experience," shares Yanko. Dare echos this sentiment. "We see each other as peers. It's not about producing a product, it's not about competition. It's about pulling a brother or sister up, not down."
This exhibit "has been born out of their talent, mutual respect and close friendship". It is described as "the general topic of conversation when it comes to us [the four artists]. We start with nothing and some how the language spirals into layers upon layers of broad discussion. These are my boys, it's a treat to get to share walls with them", explains Yanko.
In addition to featuring individual pieces, the group collaborated on two pieces that will also be included in the show. Cogle adds "While our styles couldn't be more different, on canvas everything just meshed perfectly." Artist and show curator Adam Dare adds "As artists, I know their styles and I knew what would look good aesthetically. The pieces came together organically."
